#20 Men's Ice Hockey Drops Series Finale to Niagara 6-1

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team fell to Niagara this afternoon by a final score of 6-1. The Pioneers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 21 when SHU travels to face Army West Point. Puck-drop is set for 7:05 p.m.

First Period 

  • SHU outshot Niagara 11-10 in the period.
  • Neither side got on the board in the first half of the period as both defenses couldn't find the back of the net.
  • Then 13:04 in the period, Niagara struck first with a goal by Dylan Mills off a pair of assists by Zac Herrmann and Jordan Wishman to put Niagara ahead 1-0.
  • A little under ten minutes later the Purple Eagles upped the lead to two off a goal by Eric Cooley 14:57 into the period off a pair of assists by Ben Sokay and Jack Billings to give Niagara a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.

 

Second Period 

  • The Pioneers were outshot in the period 11-8.
  • Once again the Purple Eagles struck late in the period as a goal by Dylan Mills 14:22 into the period off a pair of assists by Cam Cook and Jared Brandt put Niagara ahead 3-0.
  • Then in the closing seconds of the period at 19:43 into the period Brandt scored off a pair of assists by Ben Sokay and Jack Billings to put the Purple Eagles ahead 4-0 heading into the third period.

 

Third Period

  • The Pioneers outshot Niagara 13-10 in the period.
  • Niagara held off the offensive attack in the third period until the closing minutes as at 16:46 on an empty net goal by Jon Hill to give Niagara a 5-0 lead.
  • Then two minutes later at 18:48 in the period, Nic Mucci scored a power-play goal to give the Purple Eagles a 6-0 lead.
  • When all signs looked like this would be the first shutout the Pioneers have faced this season, sophomore Ryan Steele gave the Pioneers their lone goal of the game 19:04 into the period to end the game with Niagara winning 6-1.
