Late Third Period Goal by Tugnutt Leads to Tie With Canisius

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Ice Hockey team tied Canisius 3-3 in traditional overtime before falling to the Golden Griffs in the three-on-three double overtime period to give Canisius the extra point the Atlantic Hockey standings. The Pioneers look to take a victory in the two game set tomorrow afternoon when SHU faces off at home with Canisius at 1:05 p.m.

First Period

  • The Pioneers outshot Canisius in the opening period 7-4.
  • Both defenses dominated the first period as neither side was able to tally a goal in the first half of the period.
  • A total of four blocked shots were tallied in which senior Mike Lee and junior Daniel Petrick each recorded a blocked shots for the Pioneers.
  • SHU did get on the board as a goal by senior Vito Bavaro off a duo off assists by junior Alex Bates and sophomore Austin Magera gave SHU a 1-0 lead 16:41 into the period.
  • Canisius went 0-2 on the power-play while SHU went 0-1 in the first period.

 

Second Period

  • The Pioneers continued an aggressive offensive attack as they tallied 13 shots on goal while holding Canisius to just seven.
  • But it would be the Canisius that scored in the period as a goal by Nick Hutchison 8:58 into the period off an assist by Lee Lapid evened the score at 1-1.
  • After the Lapid goal neither side followed up with a goal keeping the game tied up heading into the final period of regulation.
  • SHU went 0-2 on the power-play in the period while the Pioneers didn't run into any penalty trouble allowing no power-play chances for Canisius in the period.

 

Third Period 

  • The Pioneers outshot the Golden Griffins in the third period 12-8
  • Four goals were scored all in third period beginning with a goal by first-year Jeppe Urup just 4:39 into the period off assists by Matt Tugnutt and Braeden Tuck to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
  • Canisius answered right back as a goal by Austin Alger at 5:42 into the period off assists by David Melaragni and Nick Hutchinson notched the game up at 2-2.
  • After a little break in the scoring by both sides Canisius would come back to take the lead off a power-play goal by Lee Lapid at 10:40 into the period to give Canisius a 3-2 lead.
  • But in the closing minutes of the period junior Matt Tugnutt would cash in his 12th goal of the year off assists by senior Mike Lee and Braeden Tuck to even the score up and sending the game into overtime.

 

Overtime

  • Only six shots were taken in the first overtime period which was the typicall five-on-five matchup but neither side was able to score sending the game into the second OT period with both sides now limited to three-on-three play.
  • Only 1:14 into the period a goal by Lapid would give the Golden Griffs the extra point and double-OT victory by a final score of 4-3.
