Softball Splits Opening Games At Spartan Classic

GREENSBORO, N.C.- The Sacred Heart University Softball team split its opening two games at the UNCG Spartan Classic this afternoon. The Pioneers took the first game against Saint Peter's by a final score of 8-0 in five innings while the team fell to UNCG by a final of 9-5. The Pioneers will return to action tomorrow Mar. 9 when the Pioneers face off against Delaware. First pitch is set for 9:30 a.m.

 

Game 1: SHU 8 Saint Peter's 0

 

The Scoring

  • A single through the right side by sophomore Kylee Harvey in the top of the third inning would score in Stephanie Mangiameli and Jennie Boisvert to put the Pioneers ahead 2-0.
  • In the top of the fifth inning an RBI single by graduate student Fallon Bevino would score in a Mangiameli from third to put the Pioneers ahead 3-0.
  • Shortly after in the fifth, first-year Amy Petrovich would launch a double to right field scoring in senior Hailey Desroisers and junior Katelyn Christian to put the Pioneers ahead 5-0.
  • Then in the same inning sophomore Caroline Kruger would blast a home run to left field scoring in three runs to give the Pioneers the 8-0 victory.

 

The Numbers

  • The Pioneers would outhit the Peacocks 10 to 4 in the game.
  • Sophomore Shyanne Fennell would pick up her first win of the season as she went five innings, giving up no runs on just four hits.
  • Sophomore Stephanie Mangiameli would go 2-3 from the plate with a pair of singles in the game.

 

Game 2: SHU 5 UNCG 9

 

The Scoring 

  • A two run home run to left field by Fallon Bevino would put the Pioneers up 2-0 in the top of the first
  • In the bottom of the third, UNCG would tally eight runs in the inning off a double, a homerun, and a couple of singles to put the Spartans ahead 8-2.
  •  In the bottom of the fifth UNCG would increase the lead to 9-2 as an RBI double would score in the runner from second.
  • In the top of the sixth first-year Amy Petrovich would launch her third homerun of the season to cut the lead to 9-3.
  • Then an RBI double by Mangiameli would score in two more runs to make the final score 9-5.

 

The Numbers

  • The Pioneers would get outhit by the Spartans nine to eight in the game.
  • Sophomore Colleen Walsh would have the best day in the circle for the Pioneers as she went 3.1 innings giving up just one run and one hit.
