Pioneers Record Shutout In Game Two To Split Doubleheader At Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y.— The Sacred Heart University softball team avenged a one-run loss in game one with a shutout win in game two to split the doubleheader at Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon. 

The Pioneers (19-14) battled back late from a three-run deficit but the Seawolves (13-12) held on for the 3-2 win in game one. Emily Orosco twirled a two-hit shutout in game two as the Pioneers earned the 4-0 win in the second game at University Field.

 

Game One – Stony Brook 3, SHU 2 

The Scoring…

Bottom of the 2nd inning… Stony Brook opened the scoring in the second as Jourdin Hering recorded the two-RBI double with the bases loaded and one out. Ileana Torres followed that up with an RBI single right after for the 3-0 lead.

Top of the 6th inning… The Pioneers got runners in scoring position with runners on second and third with one out. Caroline Kruger recorded the RBI fielder's choice to get the Pioneers on the board. Cierra Casale picked up the big two-out RBI single to get the second run across. 

The Numbers…

  • SHU recorded nine hits in the opening game with Hailey Desrosiers and Katelyn Christian recording three each.
  • The Pioneers stranded 10 runners on base to the Seawolves six.
  • McCann dropped the decision, allowing three runs on five hits.

 

Game Two – SHU 4, Stony Brook 0

The Scoring… 

Top of the 4th inning… SHU broke open the scoring in game two with a leadoff home run by Jennie Boisvert in the fourth inning.

Top of the 6th inning… SHU recorded three straight singles to load the bases leading off the sixth. Stephanie Mangiameli earned the RBI walk to bring in SHU's second run. Christian followed that up with a RBI sacrifice fly before Fallon Bevino capped the scoring with a RBI single to center field.

The Numbers…

  • SHU outhit Stony Brook 11-2 in game two as four Pioneers recorded multiple hits.
  • Orosco struck out nine in seven shutout innings for her eighth win of the season.

Noteworthy…

  • Desrosiers extended her hitting streak to five straight games. Kylee Harvey also extended hers to four games.
  • SHU has recorded eight shutouts this season, with Orosco recording her fourth of the year.

The Pioneers welcome crosstown rival Fairfield to Pioneer Park on Thursday, April 12. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
