Pioneers Record 4-0 Shutout In Game Two To Split Doubleheader at LIU Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The Sacred Heart University softball team battled back with four runs in game two to split a doubleheader at LIU Brooklyn on Sunday. The Blackbirds (20-26, 8-7 NEC) came away with a 2-0 shutout in game one before the Pioneers (29-21, 9-5 NEC) recorded the 4-0 shutout in game two to split the twin bill at LIU Field. 

Game One – LIU Brooklyn 2, SHU 0 

The Scoring…

Bottom of the 1st inning… The Blackbirds struck in the bottom half of the first as Patricia Griffin recorded the RBI single up the middle with one out.

Bottom of the 3rd inning… Alina Castillo opened the inning with a triple down the left field line. SHU picked up two quick outs but it was Griffin yet again with a RBI single to the gap at short to push the score to 2-0.

The Numbers…

  • SHU was outhit 4-2 in the opening game, as Kelyn Fillmore and Jennie Boisvert were the lone Pioneers to record a hit.
  • Kristen McCann suffered the loss pitching her 16th complete game, allowing two runs on four hits.

 

Game Two – SHU 4, LIU Brooklyn 0

The Scoring… 

Top of the 1st inning… Hailey Desrosiers opened game two with a triple to the gap in left-center field. Stephanie Mangiameli drove her in with a sacrifice fly to right field to get SHU on the board.

Top of the 3rd inning… Fillmore went first pitch swinging against Victoria Lowe with one out sending the offering over the centerfield wall for the 2-0 lead.

Top of the 5th inning… The Pioneers loaded up the bases with one out capitalizing on a Blackbirds error. Fallon Bevino then laced a single back to the pitcher for her 20th RBI of the season.

Top of the 6th inning… Fillmore picked up the sacrifice fly to left field with the bases loaded and one out for the final run of the game. 

The Numbers…

  • After being held to five combined hits in the last three games SHU recorded nine in game two to end the weekend with a win.
  • Desrosiers and Bevino recorded multi-hit games for the Pioneers.
  • Fillmore recorded a team-high two runs batted in.
  • Emily Orosco recorded the complete game shutout allowing just four hits in game two.

Noteworthy…

  • SHU has tied a program high in wins at the Division I level with 29. The last time the Pioneers recorded 29 wins was back in 2011.
  • Desrosiers recorded her 15th multi-hit game of the season on the day, increasing her team lead to 47 hits.
  • Bevino set a new career high with 20 runs batted in.
  • Fillmore recorded a new career single-season high with her fifth home run of the season. She now has 13 home runs for her career.

Up Next… 

The Pioneers travel up the road for a non-conference matchup against Quinnipiac on Tuesday, May 1. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
