SHU Softball Drops Doubleheader at Furman

GREENVILLE, S.C.— The Sacred Heart softball team dropped a doubleheader to Furman on Wednesday. After the contests got postponed a day due to rain, the Paladins (18-4) rallied late to take game one over the Pioneers (5-7) 4-3 in extra innings. SHU was unable to generate offense in game two, falling 5-0.

Game One – Furman 4, SHU 3 – 8 inn.

The Scoring… 

Top of the 1st inning… After the leadoff out, Stephanie Mangiameli and Kelyn Fillmore reached on a walk and hit by pitch. Fallon Bevino loaded the bases with her single in the gap at shortstop. Katelyn Christian followed up with a two-RBI single up the middle to get runs on the board. Hailey Desrosiers followed with the sacrifice fly to right field to score Bevino from third and give SHU the 3-0 lead. 

Bottom of the 6th inning… The Paladins got on the board in the sixth as AnnaRose Borrelli recorded the RBI groundout with two runners on with one out. A dropped fly ball at second base on the first pitch swing from Marissa Guimbarda allowed for Furman to grab another run to cut the deficit to one.

 

Bottom of the 7th inning… Casey Bigham led off the inning with a single to right field and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With the tying run in scoring position, Caroline Cash delivered a single to left field that was mishandled by the Pioneers allowing Bigham to score and force extra innings.

Bottom of the 8th inning… Starting extras with a runner on second base, Borrelli picked up the ground out to advance the runner to third. After a fielder's choice allowed Guimbarda to reach first with one out. A wild pitch in the next at-bat allowed the winning run to cross the dish.

The numbers…

  • The Pioneers outhit the Paladins 7-3 in the game.
  • Christian and Bevino led SHU with two-hits each.
  • McCann recorded a season-high nine strikeouts while surrendering just one earned run.

Game Two – Furman 5, SHU 0

The Scoring…. 

Bottom of the 1st… Furman got on the board with a leadoff home run by Lauren Duggar off the 1-1 pitch from Shyanne Fennell. An RBI double by Johnston and RBI single up the middle by Borrelli pushed the lead to 3-0. The inning ended with an RBI walk by Bigham and an RBI single by Duggars pushed the lead to five.

The numbers…

  • SHU was outhit by Furman 8-3 in game two.
  • Fillmore led the Pioneers at the plate going 2-for-3 with a double.
  • Colleen Walsh made her pitching debut in relief. She picked up three strikeouts in three shutout innings.

The Pioneers conclude spring break in a round-robin tournament at UNC-Wilmington. SHU kicks off the weekend against the tournament hosts on Friday, March 9 at 12:30 pm.
