Box Score The Sacred Heart University field hockey team dropped its home finale, 2-1, to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe, Rider University, Friday night at Johnson Field. The Pioneers fall to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in league play, while the Broncs improve to 11-6 on the season and 4-1 in conference play.
SHU controlled play for large portions of the opening half, but were unable to break through. Rider scored in the 26thminute to take a 1-0 lead into the intermission. The Broncs struck again early in the second-half, to secure the victory.
Hailey Power made a save in 50:11 of action for SHU in taking the loss. Emily Degennaro started and made three saves for SHU in 17:12. Lena Vandam made nine saves for Rider in a winning effort.
The Pioneers wrap up the regular season on Sunday, when they travel to Columbia for a 2 p.m. match.
First Half
- Rider broke through in the 26thminute, as Tess van Ommeren fed a ball across the front of the crease and Jade Freeberg snuck it home between the goalkeeper and the opposite post
- The Pioneers recorded five corners in the opening half, 5-2, as both teams finished with eight shots
Second Half
- Rider took a 2-0 advantage on a Marion Waterkeyn goal at 42:58, from a van Ommeren pass
- SHU cut the deficit in half with 5:30 to play, when Emily Alexis fed Colleen McAninley
- The Pioneers held a 4-1 corner advantage in the second half as well
- Brittany Romanczuk kept Rider in the lead with back-to-back defensive saves in the second half

- The Pioneers finish the MAAC regular season at 2-3 and are the fourth-seed in next weekend's MAAC Tournament
- SHU will face regular season champion Monmouth at 2 p.m., Friday, November 2, in West Long Branch, N.J.
