Box Score SHELTON, Conn.— The Sacred Heart women's hockey earned a 3-1 win over Holy Cross on Friday night at the Sports Center of Connecticut. Forward Jayne Lewis buried two goals and Taylor Moreland had three assists.
The Pioneers entered the game leading the nation in total goals scored with 119 with Moreland leading the NEWHA in point scoring (23-26-49)
Holy Cross started fast and opened the scoring at the 2:31 mark of the first period. Julie Matthias found the back of the net to put the crusaders into a 1-0 lead assisted by Kara Violette.
The second period belonged to the Pioneers who picked up three goals. Moreland raced into the attacking zone before crossing the puck for Lewis to make it 1-1 at the 5:21 mark. Just over three minutes later SHU took the lead on the power play. Moreland on hand again, setting up Maddie Bishop at the 8:30 mark. The Pioneers would extend their lead to 3-1 at the 11:42 mark. Moreland skated into the attacking zone towards the net before unselfishly crossing the puck to Lewis making the attacking rush to bury her second and the final goal of the game.
The Crusaders continued to work the puck and and create opportunities in the third period, outshhting SHU 17-8, but the third period ended goaless with Sarah Erban coming up with numerous big saves for SHU
Holy Cross out shot SHU 33-30 on the night. Erban recorded 32 saves in goal for the Pioneers and Julia Pelletier made 27 stops for Holy Cross
The Pioneers wrap up the weekend series against the Crusaders on Saturday with a 4:0 pm start at the Sports Center of Connecticut.
