Women's Soccer Falls in Season Opener to Vermont

Box Score

BURLINGTON, Vt.— The Sacred Heart women's soccer team fell in its season opener to the University of Vermont, 2-1 on Friday night at Virtue Field.

After a scoreless first half, Vermont was first to get on the board as Angie Salvi scored off a header on the corner kick from Sarah Martin in the 47th minute. A stoppage of play due to lightening that delayed the game for 30 minutes. After the delay, SHU was looking to get on the board in the opening contest of the year.  Junior Melanie DaSilva picked up the Pioneers opening goal in the 76th minute on a breakaway past Vermont keeper Coco Speckmaier.

With both teams battling to open the season with a win, the Catamounts drew a pivotal foul in the box in the 78th minute. That set up Martin to put by the penalty kick to give Vermont the 2-1 lead. SHU was held without a shot on goal over the final 12 minutes.

SHU was outshot 20-10 by Vermont with DaSilva and senior captain Kim McNally contributing to the Pioneers four shots on goal with two apiece. Junior goalkeeper Nicole Sambuco recorded seven saves in goal for SHU.

The Pioneers travel to New Hampshire for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference game on Sunday August 21.
