Box Score NEW BRITAIN, Conn.—The Sacred Heart baseball team dropped the final game of the weekend series to CCSU, 9-5 on Sunday afternoon. With the series sweep, the Blue Devils (26-18, 15-5 NEC) take the season series 4-2 over the Pioneers (16-29, 9-10 NEC).
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as freshman Stephen Thibault smacked the RBI double to centerfield. Senior Ted Shaw would drive in junior Cody Doyle with his RBI groundout, giving SHU the 2-0 advantage. The Blue Devils answered in the bottom of the inning on Buddy Dewaine's one-out home run to left field of senior James Taubl.
CCSU took hold of the game with a four-run bottom of the third as Ryan Costello gave them the lead with his two RBI double down the right field line. TT Bowens followed that up with a RBI triple to right center field and would score on Mitch Guilmette's sacrifice fly to left field. A three-run bottom of the fifth inning on Nick Garland's RBI double, Nick Landell's RBI single and then a RBI double by Tyler Coleman gave the Blue Devils the 8-2 lead.
SHU combated that with a three-run inning of their own of starter Ron Grant as Thibault picked up the RBI single through the left side. Shaw then followed suit with his RBI single up the middle. Thibault would come around to score on a throwing error by Landell to bring the score to 8-5. CCSU responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning off the sacrifice fly by Dewaine. The Pioneers threatened with runners in scoring position in the top of the seventh and ninth innings but were unable to cross the plate again.
Thibault and Shaw led the Pioneers with two hits and two RBI each. Taubl dropped the decision pitching two and two-third innings, allowing five runs on four hits. Senior John Sostarich pitched two scoreless frames in relief for SHU.
The Pioneers travel to UConn for a non-conference matchup on Tuesday, May 9 at 3:00 p.m.
