Pioneers Hot Hitting Continues with 17-4 win over Mount on Saturday Afternoon

EMMITSBURG, Md.— The Sacred Heart baseball team continued its stellar hitting on Saturday defeating Mount St. Mary's 17-4 in seven innings. The Pioneers (15-25, 8-6 NEC) starting lineup all reached base and contributed a run in the victory over the Mountaineers (5-31, 3-15 NEC). 

The Sacred Heart offense featured six hitters with multiple hits, junior Anthony Capozziello lead the way with a career-high four hits. Senior Keith Klebart, junior Alex Perry, freshman Elijah Brown and redshirt junior PJ DeFilippo all recorded two hits each. Klebart tied a career-high with four runs batted in and two doubles in the victory. Brown recorded his first career home run and classmate Austin Markmann added his third homer of the season. Sophomore Brent Teller recorded a career-high seven strikeouts for his second win of the season. 

The Mountaineers got on the board first as Tyler Post lined a RBI double to left center field in the bottom of the first inning. Michael Collins kept the Pioneers in check through the first two innings before SHU plated seven runs in the top of the third inning. The Pioneers loaded the bases with no outs to open the inning, setting up Klebart to line the three-RBI double down the third base line. DeFilippo drove him a batter later with a single through the left side. Markmann followed that with the homer over the left field fence. Perry continued the inning with the bunt single and advanced to third on two steals. Freshman Stephen Thibault drove him in on a RBI single to left field to take the 7-1 lead. Mount added two runs in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded fielder's choice and error by Markmann.

Brown's first career home run came with a runner on first and one out in the top of the fifth inning as he lined one off Josh Little to go up 9-3. Post added his second double of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to push the score 9-4. Sacred Heart recorded an eight run seventh inning as Klebart opened the scoring with his second RBI double of the game. The Pioneers then loaded up the bases on a couple walks by Noah Smith. Perry and senior Jake Friar both recorded RBI walks and Markmann scored on a wild pitch. Thibault picked up his second RBI of the game on the error by Vaughn Parker. Brown then plated double down the right field line. Capozziello concluded the scoring with a two-RBI single to bring the score to 17-4. Senior John Sostarich pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh inning to close out the game.

The second game of the doubleheader between the Pioneers and Mountaineers will now be tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. followed by the nine-inning finale 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
