Fairfield, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University women's tennis team topped cross-town rival Fairfield on Thursday afternoon, winning 4-3. The Stags came out and won the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 despite Olivia Podsiebierski and Adrianne Alfonso winning at No. 3, 6-2.
In singles action the Pioneers would be on the right end of two, 3-set matches in a thrilling match.
SHU won at No. 1 and No. 2 with Brianne Lauria and Olivia Podsiebierski both winning in straight sets to take a 2-1 lead. Fairfield fought back with win's at at No. 5 and No. 6 to take back the lead, 3-2.
Taylor Gurda at No. 3 then evened the match coming back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The match would come down to Adrianne Alfonso at No. 4. After splitting sets Alfonso got off to a 4-0 lead in the thrid and went on the take the set 6-1, to give the Pioneers the victory.
