Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRONX, N.Y.—The Sacred Heart baseball team was swept in a doubleheader by Fordham at Houlihan Park on Friday afternoon. The Rams (5-9) shutout the Pioneers (5-12), 1-0 in game one and picked up the 2-1 in walk off win in game two.

Game One

The Pioneer bats were neutralized by Rams starter Jimmy Murphy and reliever Alvin Melendez, who combined for the shutout performance. Murphy held SHU to just two hits and collected 14 strikeouts in eight innings of work. Junior catcher Cody Doyle picked up the first of the Pioneers two hits in the game with a two-out double in the top of the third inning. Junior Dan Schock would get the Pioneers second hit with a double in the top of the fifth inning. Fordham loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth with a single by Justin Bardwell, a walk by Luke Stampfl and a single by Matt Kozuch. Bardwell scored the lone run of the game on a passed ball while Ryan Mahoney was at the dish. Pioneers starter James Taubl was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout to Mahoney. SHU threatened with the tying run on second base in the top of the ninth in junior Alex Perry but were unable to tie it up as Melendez got senior first baseman Keith Klebart to pop out to second base to end the game.

Taubl went six and a third innings with no earned runs and four walks. Sophomore Brent Teller went an inning and a third with no hits and one strikeout. The Rams out hit the Pioneers 11-2 in the game.

Game Two

The Rams took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Kozuch then singled up the middle to bring home Stampfl who tripled the previous at bat. The Pioneers were down to the final two outs in the top of the seventh inning, before Schock doubled the 1-1 pitch from Rams starter Reiss Knehr down the left field line. Freshman Austin Markmann then stepped up to the plate and roped a RBI triple to right center field to tie the game at 1-1. After a groundout to start the bottom of the seventh, Pioneers starter John Sostarich yielded back-to-back walks. Sophomore Baylor Sundahl came on in relief and induced a groundout by Pat Gardner to put runners on second and third with two outs. Sundahl then surrendered a walk to Jake Baker to load the bases. With the bases loaded, Bardwell worked a 3-2 count for the Rams before taking ball four to bring home the game winning run.

Senior captain Jake Friar went 2-for-2 at the plate. Markmann recorded his first career triple and fellow freshman Stephen Thibault picked up his first career double in the fourth inning. Sostarich went six and a third innings, surrendering two runs on four hits. Knehr recorded 11 strikouts for Fordham.
