Box Score WATERTOWN, Mass.— The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team fell to Bentley 4-0 on Friday night at the John. A Ryan Ice Arena. The Falcons capitalized on home ice to take the series opener in the second home-and-home series between the two clubs.
The Pioneers (10-16-5, 8-14-3 AHA) and Bentley (11-14-6, 10-10-5 AHA) played an even first period before the Falcons struck on the SHU misfortune at 18:12 in the period. Senior Jeff Carroll's stick broke as he attempted to clear the puck out of the SHU zone, Drew Callin was there to collect the puck and found Matt Riggleman on the backdoor pass for the 1-0 score. Bentley extended the lead to 2-0 on the snipe by Jonathan Desbiens on the assist by Alexey Solovyev at 9:20. On the power play, Kyle Schmidt found linemate Max French on the breakaway for the tic tack toe goal to continue to push the Bentley lead at 15:03 in the second period.The Falcons tacked on the final goal at 6:10 in the third period as Tyler Derewsky shot out of the penalty box and took the puck in for the breakaway and beat sophomore Brett Magnus' glove side to bring the score to 4-0. The Pioneers nearly answered couple minutes later as Nick Lotito had the breakaway opportunity out of the box but was denied by the left pad of goaltender Aidan Pelino. The Pioneers were unable to get past the freshman the rest of the period as the final would remain 4-0.
The Falcons went 1-for-8 on the power play, while SHU was held to 0-for-3. Bentley outshot the Pioneers for the game, going 1-for-8 on the power play. The Pioneers were 0-for-3 on the power play. Magnus made 28 saves for SHU as Pelino, the reigning Atlantic Hockey Goalie of the week recorded 24 saves in his second shutout in the last three games.
SHU hosts Bentley tomorrow in the home regular season finale at Webster Bank Arena. The Pioneers will honor the 10 seniors prior to the 7:05pm contest.
First Period
- Graboski collected the loose puck on the turnover at 2:45 into the first period and fired it on Pelino but pad save.
- Pelino with the save on the wrist shot by Clare and the rebound by Minello at 9:00.
- Magnus squares up on a wide-open shot by Max French at 10:56.
- Danforth with the beautiful feed to Minello right on the doorstep but was denied by Pelino at 13:15 in the first.
- Glove save by Magnus on shot by Donners at 4:13 left in the first period.
Second Period
- Pelino with the stop on the wrist shot by Bavaro two minutes into the second period.
- Desbiens with the shot from the right circle to go past Magnus on the lead pass by Solovyev.
- DeConcilys hits McIlmurrary in the slot on the Pioneer rush but denied by the glove save by Pelino at 10:40 in the second period.
- Magnus with the big save on the snipe by Jago at 18:35.
Third Period
- Bentley outshot the Pioneers 13-5 in the final period.
- Durewsky shot out of the penalty box and took the puck in for the breakaway and beat Magnus glove side to extend the lead to 4-0 at 6:10.
- Pelino with the breakaway save with the blocker as Lotito got out of the box at 11:50 in the third period.
- Magnus with back to back saves on shots by Suter at 17:48.
