2-1 OT Heartbreaker For Women's Ice Hockey In Season Opener

Box Score

SHELTON, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's ice hockey team fought back from an early goal to tie the game at 1-1 with a goal from Meghan Kebalka to take the game to overtime. Megan Klaus scored the game-winning goal at 1:19 of overtime as the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team defeated SHU, 2-1, on Friday evening at the SportsCenter of Connecticut.

Klaus set up the game's opening goal as Kaley Campbell scored Saint Anselm's first goal of season in the opening period. Freshman Nicole Saber also picked up a helper on Campbell's goal for her first collegiate point on her collegiate debut.

SHU came out strong in the second, tallying 11 shots but were unable to find the breakthrough. Kebalka eventually scored the equalizing goal with 3:41 left on the clock of the third period on a powerplay, assisted by Brittany Smith and Carly Radovich to take the game to overtime.

Klaus found the back of the net for Saint Anselm (1-0-0) early in the overtime session off assists from Jackie Guy and Ashley Moran just 24 seconds after Sacred Heart (0-1-0) was assessed a minor penalty.

Maddie Scavotto stopped 19-of-20 shots faced to pick up the victory in net for the Hawks, while Devan Kane turned aside 18-of-20 shots for the Pioneers.

The two teams complete their opening weekend series with a 2 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 21 at the SportsCenter of Connecticut.
