RIT Tops Men's Hockey, 3-1 in Series Opener

ROCHESTER, N.Y.— The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team dropped its third straight Atlantic Hockey contest, as RIT scored twice in the third period to win 3-1 at the Gene Polisseni Center on Friday night. 

RIT (9-10-1, 9-5 AHC) scored the lone goal of the opening period at 9:18 on the power play opportunity. Liam Kerins put a one timer from the middle of the slot from the feed by Caleb Cameron past Sacred Heart junior goaltender Nathan Perry. Sacred Heart (6-13-2, 4-11 AHA) answered on its second power play chance of the game. Senior Jordan Minello picked up the Pioneers goal power play goal as freshman Zach Tsekos found him wide open from the right circle at 16:56 in the second period to tie it up at 1-1. Tsekos and sophomore Liam Clare have recorded assists in back-to-back games. The Tigers took control in the third, as Erik Brown collected the rebound off a shot by Darren Brady for the go-ahead goal at 12:53 in the period. It was Brown once again as he picked up his second tally of the game with an empty net goal at 19:19 to bring the final to 3-1.

The Tigers outshot the Pioneers 42-21 in the game. RIT went 1-for-5 on the power play, Sacred Heart went 1-for-3 on the man advantage. Mike Rotolo picked up 20 saves in goal for RIT. Perry set a new career-high with 39 stops in goal for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers wrap up their season series with the Tigers tomorrow night at 7:05pm.

First Period

- Nylen's slapshot from the blue line, hits off the post on the SHU power play halfway through the first period.

- Rotolo with a big save on an open shot by Connor Doherty, from the nice lead pass from Hansen at 17:07.

- RIT outshot the Pioneers 9-7 in the first.   

Second Period   

- Perry with a big blocker save from a one timer from Peron-Fontaine at 5:28. Perry picked up 15 stops in the second period.

- Minello rifled one in from right circle but Rotolo made the stop at 15:29.

- Tsekos found Minello from the right circle on the power play at 16:56 in the period. Minello netted his 12th goal of the season. 

Third Period

- SHU went four-for-four on the penalty kill in the third.  

- Pioneers were held to just five shots on goal.

- Perry sprawled out for the pad save on a shot by Danny Smith at 11:43. Perry recorded 16 saves in the period.
