STATEN ISLAND – The Sacred Heart women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in Northeast Conference play by winning its fifth match in its last sixth outings, a sweep of Wagner on Friday afternoon. SHU did not drop a set en route to moving over .500 at 8-7.
Three Pioneers won for the third time in a row. Katie DeRienzo, Taylor Gurda and Lindsey Post dropped a combined ten games in their respective first, third and fifth singles matches. For DeRienzo, it was her team-best 14th win of the season.
For Olivia Podsiebierski, Claudia Ruiz and Mariah Wardius, it was a second consecutive victory. Podsiebierski's win was her tenth, good for second best on the team, while Ruiz moved to .500 at 8-8 and Wardius improved to a perfect 2-0.
Sacred Heart also dominated doubles play, losing just a total of five games in the three matches. Podsiebierski and Ruiz won a fourth straight match together, 6-1 at the second position, and DeRienzo and Gurda won for a second time in a row, 6-2 at the number one spot. Paired together for the first time this year, Post and Tori Oates took the third doubles match 6-2.
SHU returns to the Pioneer Tennis Courts on Monday, hosting cross-town rival Fairfield at 3 pm.
