Women's Tennis Cruises into NEC Semifinals

WEST WINDSOR N.J. – The Sacred Heart women's tennis team cruised into the semifinals of the 2016 Northeast Conference Championships on Friday afternoon, making quick work of Wagner in sweeping the two team's quarterfinal match to move back over .500 to 10-9. After taking the doubles point with two comfortable victories, SHU lost just three games in the three singles matches to finish, sending the Pioneers to the semifinals for the first time since 2013, where they will face second seeded Fairleigh Dickinson.

Highlighting doubles play was Paige Olson's and Lindsey Post's fifth consecutive win together. The duo took their second flight match 6-3 to clinch the point with their NEC-best seventh second doubles victory this season. Also moving into first in the league as a pair was Katie DeRienzo and Taylor Gurda, whose 6-2 first doubles triumph gave the two a 10-2 mark in dual play.

Olson, Gurda and Olivia Podsiebierski were the three Pioneers to earn singles victories on the day, although DeReizno, Post and Claudia Ruiz were all winning in the second set when their matches were halted due to the match going final.

Olson's sweep at the second spot was her tenth overall this season, making her the third Pioneer to reach the mark and also moving her into a three way tie for the most second singles wins in the NEC with seven. Podsiebierski was one of the two already in double digits as her victory was her 12th overall and seventh at the third position, now the most in the conference. Gurda's win was her seventh at the fourth spot, extending her league lead.

Sacred Heart and Fairleigh Dickinson met less than a week ago, with the Knights defeating the Pioneers 5-2 on April 17. SHU dropped the doubles point and would go on to lose four of the six singles matches, getting wins from DeRienzo and Mariah Wardius
