(April 13, 2016)—The Sacred Heart softball team (9-21-1) went 0-1-1 at Stony Brook (17-17-2) Wednesday afternoon falling 4-2 in game one of the doubleheader before tying at three runs a piece in game two. Lauren Delgadillo and Fallon Bevino combined for all five of SHU's RBI, each hitting a home run.
Sacred Heart is back in action tomorrow as former conference foe Quinnipiac comes to Pioneer Park for a 3:30 p.m. game.
The Basics:
Scores: Stony Brook 4 – SHU 2
SHU 3 – Stony Brook 3
Location: University Field, Stony Brook, N.Y.
New Records: Sacred Heart 9-21-1, Stony Brook 17-17-2
Game 1:
Highlights:
- Delgadillo knocked in both of SHU's runs with a single to right field in the top of the fifth
- Kristen McCann threw the second complete game of her young career striking out two batters
For the Foes:
- The Seawolves hit two homeruns off Sacred Heart's rookie starter, including Allie Pisciotta's three-run, game-winning shot
- All of Stony Brook's runs were off long balls
How It Happened:
- Lexie Shue put the Seawolves on the board first with a one out, solo homer in the bottom of the second. A fielding error allowed SBU to put a runner in scoring position, but McCann got Pisciotta to lineout to get out of the inning
- After quiet third and fourth innings, the Pioneer bats came alive in the fifth for a one-out rally. With the lead off batter out, Carina Zupa worked a walk before moving into scoring position on Bevino's infield single. Another walk by McKenna Wiegand loaded the bases for Delgadillo. The sophomore came through singling to right field to score two giving Sacred Heart the 2-1 lead. That would be all they got, however, as Jane Sallen got the next two batters out
- Unfortunately for SHU, the Seawolves staged a comeback in the bottom half of the inning with the first three batters coming around to score on Pisciotta's homerun. After Pisciotta's game-winner, McCann settled back down allowing just one runner to reach through the rest of the game
Game 2:
Highlights:
- Delgadillo and Bevino both went yard in the second game, bringing home all three of SHU's runs on homeruns
- Stephanie Appelberg's patience at the plate paid off as she earned a walk in three at bats
- Emily Orosco struck out five batters through just three innings of work
For the Foes:
- Ragazzo went 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI, while Reynolds was 1-for-2 scoring a run
- Neales came into the circle to toss the last four innings striking out six batters in the process
How It Happened:
- Each team's first batter led off the game with a homerun, before both put runners in scoring position, but were unable to bring them home
- The Pioneers put four combined runners on base in the third and fourth innings but were unable to score as Stony Brook took a one-run lead on Diane Caruso's home run in the third
- Sacred Heart came back in the top of the fourth with just one hit. Wiegand led off the innings with a walk before the next batter popped out. Coming in off the bench, Bevino rocketed the ball over the fence for a 3-2 lead. Relief pitcher Lindsey Hughes got the next two batters to fly out to end the inning
- The Seawolves manufactured a run in the fifth using a walk, a fielding error and Ragazzo's single up the middle to do so, to tie the game, which was where it would stay until the end
