Men's Hockey's Season Ends In Game Three Loss At Bentley

WATERTOWN, Mass. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team saw its season come to an end Sunday night at John A. Ryan Arena, falling 4-1 to the Bentley Falcons in game three of its Atlantic Hockey Tournament first round series. 

Bentley (13-18-6) scored the opening goal with 14:33 remaining in the first period when Kyle Schmidt stole the puck just outside the blue line and fed a perfect pass to Max French who was streaking down the middle and beat Brett Magnus over the shoulder for the 1-0 lead.

The Falcons made it 2-0 in the second period when Tanner Jago took a one time pass from Schmidt and fired a big slap shot into the upper right corner for a power play goal with 8:37 left. Sacred Heart (13-20-4) answered back with a power play goal of its own. With 2:53 to go in the period as Evan Jasper fed a wide open Jordan Minello in the right circle, who then blasted the puck past Gabe Antoni to cut the lead to 2-1.

The score remained the same until late in the third period, when with 1:26 remaining and Sacred Heart crowding the zone, Bentley was able to clear the puck that resulted in a breakaway goal by Schmidt for a 3-1 lead. Schmidt added an empty net goal with 26 seconds left to seal the 4-1 victory.

Shots in the game were tied 28-28. Bentley was 1-for-3 on the power play in the game while Sacred Heart was 1-for-2. Schmidt had four points on the night with two goals and two assists. Andrew Gladiuk also had four points, all on assists.

The Pioneers close the 2015-16 season with a 13-20-4 record, their third consecutive season with double-digit wins.

FIRST PERIOD

- Sacred Heart outshot Bentley 11-8 in the period.

- The Pioneers had two shots on goal on their lone power play of the period 6:17 in.

SECOND PERIOD

- Danforth was robbed in the slot by Antoni with 12:38 remaining.

- Carroll was denied on a breakaway with 3:20 left in the period.

- Minello's goal was his 10th of the season and his fifth point in his last five games.

THIRD PERIOD

- Jasper was stopped on a breakaway by Antoni with 12:03 remaining.

- Luczyk hit a goal post with 6:26 to go.

- Magnus kept the deficit at one with1:50 to go when he saved a Schmidt shot.
