FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's tennis team cruised to a victory for a second consecutive day, defeating Rhode Island 6-1 on Thursday afternoon at the Pioneer Tennis Courts for its fourth win in five matches to move to .500 at 7-7.
SHU jumped on URI from the start, dominating doubles play to the tune of only losing two total games in the three matches. The second and third pairs of Paige Olson and Lindsey Post and Claudia Ruiz and Olivia Podsiebierski each won for the second day in a row. Olson and Post move to .500 at 4.4 together, including 4-1 at second doubles, while Ruiz and Podsiebierski have now won three straight matches. The victory was Podsibierski's 14th, tying her for the team-lead with Katie DeRienzo, who teamed with Taylor Gurda for a win at first doubles.
In singles play, DeRienzo, Gurda and Post followed victories yesterday with yet another today, sweeping positions one, four and five, respectively. DeReinzo extended her team-lead in wins to 13, while Gurda is now 5-5 at fourth singles this year. The result gave Post a perfect 4-0 record over the past two days, and moved her to 3-3 at fifth singles during the dual season.
Also winning in straight sets was Ruiz at the sixth position, while Podsibierksi took a super tiebreaker in the third set, 10-6, to improve to 9-5 in dual play. Olson was on the other side of a super tiebreaker, falling 10-3 in the third.
Sacred Heart looks to continue its hot play and move .500 on Saturday when it travels to Holy Cross for a 1 pm match.
