Box Score 2 Riverdale, N.Y. (March 26, 2016) – The Sacred Heart softball team split a pair of one-run games on Saturday afternoon against Manhattan College. The Pioneers won game one 1-0 before falling in game two 3-2.
Game one was a pitchers duel as both starters went the distance. Sacred Heart's Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) got the win and was nearly unhittable as she gave up just two hits while striking out twelve. The Pioneers got the lone run of the game in the fifth when Hailey Desrosiers (Cypress, Calif.) scored on a Stephanie Appelberg (Monroe, Conn.) RBI single up the middle.
In game two, Sacred Heart jumped out to an early lead as McKenna Wiegand (Gilbert, Ariz.) hit a two-run single up the middle to score Kristen McCann (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Kelyn Fillmore (Simi Valley, Calif.). Manhattan got two of their own in the bottom of the third to tie the game before gaining the lead on a Elena Bowman solo homerun to make it 3-2.
The Pioneers return to action Wednesday as they welcome UMass Lowell to Pioneer Park for the 2016 home-opening doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.

GAME 1: SACRED HEART vs. MANHATTAN
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Appelberg had a RBI single in the fifth to put the Pioneers on the score board
- Carlson pitched her best game of the season with 12 strikeouts
- Manhattan pitcher Briana Matazinsky also pitched well striking out 11
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Stephanie Appelberg had the only RBI of the game when she singled home Hailey Desrosiers in the fifth inning
- Victoria D'Addario (Lincoln Park, N.J.) and Fillmore led the Pioneers with two hits a piece
- Carlson had her best outing of the year pitching a complete game two-hitter and striking out 12 Jaspers
FOR THE FOES:
- Jaspers pitcher Matazinsky had 11 strikeouts
GAME 2: SACRED HEART vs. MANHATTAN
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Wiegand hit a two-run single to put the Pioneers on top early
- The Jaspers got two of their own in the bottom of the third to even the score at 2-2
- A fifth inning homerun by Bowman gave Manhattan the lead and eventual final score of 3-2
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Wiegand led the Pioneers with two hits and two RBI
- Emily Orosco (Camarillo, Calif.) and McCann combined to strikeout eleven Jasper hitters
FOR THE FOES:
- Shannon Puthe hit a RBI triple
- Bowman hit a go ahead solo homerun in the fifth that turned out to be the deciding factor in the game
