FAIRFIELD, Conn. –The Sacred Heart women's tennis team took the doubles point, but three three-set losses were the difference as the Pioneers opened their spring home schedule with a 5-2 setback against Siena on Thursday afternoon.
Although she had her five-match winning streak in singles come to an end, Katie DeRienzo paired with Taylor Gurda to win their sixth straight first doubles match, 6-4. Oliva Podsiebierski and Claudia Ruiz then clinched the point with a 6-3 decision at third doubles, giving SHU the early advantage heading into singles play.
Ruiz would go on to be the only Pioneer to win her singles match, taking sixth singles in straight sets 6-5, 7-5.
Podsiebierski, Lindsey Post and Paige Olson were the three to fall in thee sets. All three did so after taking the first set of their respective match. Podsiebierski took a first tiebreak at third singles, only to lose the second and third, 6-3, 6-2. At fifth singles, Post also took a first set tiebreak, and after getting edged 6-4 in the second, she had five match points before dropping a heartbreaking third set tiebreaker. Olson was a 6-4 winner in the first set at second singles before losing the final two, 6-1, 6-3.
Sacred Heart will be back on the Pioneer Tennis Courts tomorrow for its Northeast Conference opener, welcoming LIU Brooklyn for a 1 pm start.
