PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Two three set victories were the difference as the Sacred Heart women's tennis team knocked off Big East foe Providence on Friday night for its second consecutive win.

After SHU (5-6) earned the doubles point by taking two of the three matches, Providence (5-5) came back to take a 3-2 lead in singles play with wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles. Katie DeRienzo had initially put the Pioneers ahead 2-0 by taking her first singles match 6-3, 6-2, her fifth consecutive victory and tenth in a row between singles and doubles play. 

It was Paige Olson and Olivia Podsiebierski coming through in the three setters for Sacred Heart. Olson evened the match up at 3-3 with a comeback at second singles. After dropping the opening set 3-6, she swept the second before prevailing 6-3 in the third. That set the stage for Podsiebierski, who took the opening set of her third singles match 6-3 only to fall 4-6 in the second. She recovered though, taking the final set of the night 6-2 to clinch the Pioneer victory. 

DeRienzo and Olson each played a part in SHU's doubles point as well, finishing the night with two wins each. For DeRienzo, her 6-2 first doubles victory with Taylor Gurda was the pair's fifth straight together, all of which are part of the ten-match winning streak. Olson teamed with Lindsey Post at second doubles for a 6-4 decision.

Sacred Heart's Northeast Conference opener scheduled for Sunday at Fairleigh Dickinson has been postponed, with a makeup date yet to have been announced. The Pioneers next match will now be Thursday when it hosts Siena at 3 pm for its spring home opener.
