Box Score MILFORD, Conn. – For the second straight night, the Sacred Heart men's hockey team came up on the short end of a 2-1 scoreline against the Robert Morris Colonials Saturday at Milford Ice Pavilion.
Robert Morris (17-7-4, 14-4-4 AHC) scored first Saturday. With the Pioneers on the power play, Zac Lynch forced a turnover in the Sacred Heart zone and went end-to-end to score a shorthanded goal 6:48 into the game. Both teams had 11 shots in the first period, but it was Robert Morris that took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Sacred Heart (10-16-4, 8-13-3 AHC) tied the game 3:22 into the second period. Zach Luczyk scored his team-leading third power play goal of the game, sniping an Alec Butcher feed past Colonials goaltender Terry Shafer. Robert Morris regained the lead, 2-1, with 5:26 to play in the second on a Greg Gibson goal assisted by Eric Israel and Spencer Dorowicz. The Pioneers were held to just five shots in the third period as their attempt to rally was thwarted by the first-place Pioneers.
Robert Morris outshot Sacred Heart 30-27. The Colonials, who entered the weekend with the nation's top power play, was 0-for-10 with the man advantage Saturday. Sacred Heart was 1-for-9 on the power play. Magnus made 28 saves for SHU with Shafer stopping 26 shots for the Colonials.
After an open week, the Pioneers hit the ice on Friday, Feb. 19 when it opens a weekend series at Canisius. Faceoff at HARBORCENTER is at 7:35 p.m.
FIRST PERIOD
- Jeff Carroll nearly put SHU ahead 1-0 less than a minute into the game. His wraparound was stopped by a sprawling Shafer save.
- Sacred Heart had six of the first eight shots in the game.
- RMU's shorthanded goal was their seventh of the season.
SECOND PERIOD
- The two teams combined for 10 power plays in the period. RMU was 0-for-5 with the Pioneers going 1-for-5.
- Luczyk's goal was his ninth of the season, as well as his team-leading third power play goal. It's also his fifth goal in the last eight games.
- After two periods, shots were even 22-22.
THIRD PERIOD
- Evan Jasper nearly tied the game on a shorthanded 2-on-1 breakaway with 1:36 remaining, but Shafer stopped his one-timer.
- Erlich Doerksen blocked a Brandon Denham shot on an empty net with 0:44 remaining.
