Box Score MILFORD, Conn. – The Robert Morris Colonials scored twice in the third period and held on for a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart in men's hockey action Friday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
In the first period, Sacred Heart (10-15-4, 8-12-3 AHC) took a 1-0 lead with 13:28 remaining. With both teams skating four aside, Justin Danforth charged the zone and fed Evan Jasper, who beat Terry Shafer glove side with a perfectly placed wrist shot into the back of the net. Robert Morris (16-7-4, 13-4-4 AHC), who leads the AHC in power play percentage, went 0-for-3 on the man advantage in the period as Sacred Heart played flawless defense to keep the Colonials off the board and preserve the 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second period, RMU evened the score with 17:28 remaining in the third. Zac Lynch took the puck at the top of the circle and was able to ease across the front of the net and fire the puck past Brett Magnus. Robert Morris scored the game winner with 3:03 remaining, as Daniel Leavens won the puck in the right circle and blasted one past Magnus, beating him high glove side.
For the game, both Sacred Heart and Robert Morris were 0-for-3 on the power play. RMU outshot SHU 36-26. Magnus finished the night with 34 saves. Shafer made 25 saves for the Colonials. Friday marked the fifth time in the last seven meetings between the two teams that was decided by one goal.
Robert Morris and Sacred Heart play again tomorrow night, Saturday Feb 5th. Faceoff is 5:05 p.m. at the Milford Ice Pavilion.
FIRST PERIOD
- With 14:39 remaining, Jasper's backhander was gloved on a beautiful save by Shafer.
- Brett Magnus had nine saves in the period as SHU outshot RMU 12-9.
- Jasper's goal was his eight of season, tied for second on the team.
SECOND PERIOD
- Daniel Leavens' slap shot from the circle was stopped by a strong Magnus pad save with 16:40 remaining.
- Robert Morris outshot SHU 12-5 in the period.
THIRD PERIOD
- Danforth's shot from in close with 40 seconds left was stopped by Shafer, preventing the equalizer.
- SHU was 0-for-2 on the power play.
- Magnus made 13 saves in the period.
- RMU outshot SHU 15-9.
