Box Score WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to three games Friday night with a 1-1 overtime tie against the Army West Point Black Knights at Tate Rink.
After a scoreless first period, it was Army (5-9-5, 3-7-5 AHC) that scored first 9:44 into the second period. Tyler Pham ripped a shot top shelf from the slot with 18 seconds left on a five-minute power play to make the score 1-0. Sacred Heart (7-10-3, 6-7-2) tied the game 1:13 into the third period as Alec Butcher fed Erlich Doerksen from behind the Army net for the equalizing goal.
Each team had 37 shots on goal. Sacred Heart outshot Army 17-11 in the third period and overtime combined. The Black Knights were 1-for-6 on the power play as the Pioneers went 0-for-3. Both goaltenders – Brett Magnus for Sacred Heart, Parker Gahagen for Army – made 36 saves. It was the second time in three games that Magnus had 36 stops.
The two teams will complete the weekend's series Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 7:05 p.m.
FIRST PERIOD
- The two teams combined for three shots in the first seven minutes.
- Army was held to three shots on two power plays in the first period.
- Alec Butcher had a pair of shots saved by Gahagen midway through the period.
- Evan Jasper had a shorthanded chance stopped by Gahagen with 6:52 left.
- Justin Danforth hit the crossbar on a power play with 4:26 to play.
- Sacred Heart outshot Army 10-9 in the first period.
SECOND PERIOD
- Coltyn Hansen and Connor Doherty each had a shot on goal in the first two minutes.
- Magnus made three straight saves at the 5:00 mark to keep the game scoreless.
- The Pioneers held the Black Knights to one shot on the five-minute power play at 5:02 before Pham's goal.
- Kory Kennedy put a shot into Gahagen's glove with 9:26 remaining.
- Doherty ripped a shot from the point that Gahagen saved with 4:18 to play.
THIRD PERIOD
- Doerksen's goal was his first of the season and first since Dec. 5, 2014 at Robert Morris – a stretch of 33 games. Butcher's assist was his 12th of the season, tying him with Jasper for the team lead.
- Magnus stopped two Joe Kozlak shots with 4:57 to play.
- SHU went on the power play with 4:56 remaining in regulation, but was held to two shots.
- Butcher was denied of the game-winning goal with 0:38 left.
OVERTIME
- Gahagen stopped three straight SHU shots with 1:37 remaining.
- Magnus stopped a Nash Worden shot with 0:24 left. Fifteen seconds later, he made a save on a Conor Andrle shot.
- SHU outshot Army 6-2 in the overtime.
