FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's soccer team scored twice in the second half to break a 1-1 halftime tie, defeating the Canisius Golden Griffins 3-1 Friday afternoon at Campus Field.
Canisius (1-3-2) got on the board in the 12
th minute as Taylor Kugler fired a high shot over
Talia Schwartz (Roslyn, N.Y.) and into the net. Sacred Heart (2-2-0) tied the match 1-1 just under nine minutes before halftime.
Dana Cosmedy (Monroe, Conn.) drew a foul in the 18-yard box, leading to a penalty kick.
Annika Simmons (Coventry, Conn.) stepped up to the spot and drilled home the tying goal.
Four minutes into the second half, the Pioneers took the lead. Cosmedy headed in a cross from Lindsay Corallo (Jackson, N.J.) in the 49th minute to take a 2-1 lead. Alex Mesropyan (Mahwah, N.J.) gave Sacred Heart the brace it needed in the 83rd minute, scoring her third goal of the season on a penalty kick to make the final score 3-1.
The Pioneers travel to Hartford on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game.
FIRST HALF
- Corallo put a shot wide after four minutes
- Schwartz stopped a Samantha Gagliano shot in the fifth minute after the Canisius forward was one-on-one with the Pioneers' goalkeeper
- Brittany Hamilton (Howell, N.J.) headed a shot wide off of a corner kick in the 28th minute
- Simmons nearly scored six minutes after tying the game, putting a long shot on goal that was stopped by Canisius goalkeeper Kailee De Franks
SECOND HALF
- Cosmedy took a goal-scoring opportunity away from Canisius in the 47th minute, clearing a loose ball in the Sacred Heart 18-yard box
- Melanie DaSilva (Bristol, R.I.) took a throughball from Alexis Parlato (Center Moriches, N.Y.) in the 53rd minute and had her shot on goal saved
- Schwartz made two saves in the second half, one of which came in the 66th minute on a shot by Emma Westwater
- Westwater also put a shot over the crossbar in the 83rd minute
