EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – Katie DeRienzo and Nicole Rydzewski were winners as the Sacred Heart women's tennis team fell in Northeast Conference action to Bryant on Saturday afternoon at the East Harford Racquet Club. The loss is the second straight for the Pioneers to open April, as they are now 5-7 and 1-2 in NEC play. Bryant is now an even 6-6 on the year, including 2-1 in conference play.
DeRienzo and Rydzewski have both now won two matches in a row. In winning her first singles match 6-1, 6-4, DeRienzo improved to a perfect 3-0 in NEC play, as well as 17-4 overall. Rydzewski also cruised in straight sets at third singles, 6-4, 6-2.
All six singles matches were decided in straight sets. Lindsey Post and Taylor Gurda each lost one set by way of tiebreak in their respective losses.
In sweeping doubles, Bryant won two of the three matches in thrilling fashion. The third doubles match between Gurda and Sabrina Navarro Lopez and their competitors was not decided until the final game, 8-7. Post and Paige Olson were also victims of a close loss at first doubles, 8-6.
Sacred Heart next takes the court on Monday when it travels to Rhode Island for a 2 pm start.
