Box Score 2 WEST POINT, N.Y. (September 29, 2015)—The Sacred Heart softball team split the final non-conference doubleheader of the season with Army West Point on Wednesday. After the Black Knights rallied in the bottom of the seventh to take game one 4-3, the Pioneers had a convincing 6-2 win in the second game to head into the final games of the season Saturday against Mount St. Mary's 13-29.
After threatening in the top of the second inning of the first game, the Pioneers put three runs on the board in the third. Kate Nadler and Lauren Delgadillo led off the inning with bac-to-back singles before Kelyn Fillmore's single to left drove in Nadler. Victoria D'Addario came up next driving a double to the corner in left field scoring Delgadillo for a 2-0 lead. Senior Justine Sibthorp drove in the final Pioneer run of the inning and game with a single down the right field line.
The Black Knights got their first run off SHU starter Kacie Wentworth in the fifth inning on two hits, but their bats came alive with a three-run game-winning rally in the bottom of the seventh. After the first batter of the inning came around to score on a fielder's choice, Kristen McPeek hit the game-winning single driving in a pair of runs.
The Pioneers wasted no time in the second game as Sibthorp's three-run jack put SHU on the board early. Army lessened the scoring gap getting two unearned runs off sophomore pitcher Jamie Carlson in the bottom of the third, but that would be all she allowed giving up just one hit throughout the game while striking out 10 batters.
Sacred Heart improved its lead in the fifth inning as Courtney Machamer's pinch-hit single drove in Linsey DeDomenico, who led off the inning with a single to right field. In the next inning, SHU tacked on two more runs to its total with DeDomenico's two-run double to left field.
The Pioneers conclude the 2015 season at home on Saturday in a makeup doubleheader against NEC foe Mount St. Mary's beginning at 1:00 p.m.
