Box Score FAIRFIELD – Despite a seven run fourth inning, the Sacred Heart baseball team fell victim to its fourth straight one run loss, including second consecutive walk off, in an 8-7 ten inning setback at Fairfield on Tuesday afternoon. The fourth straight defeat drops SHU's overall record to 14-23, while Fairfield moves to 11-27.
Troy Scocca came through with the game winning pinch-hit single with one out in the tenth, brining in Michael Conti, who had tripled with one out. Kevin Radziewicz walked after the triple to set up the opportunity for Scocca.
Jesus Medina, Zack Short, Keith Klebart, and Anthony Capozziello all had two hits for the Pioneers. Short also drove in two runs, while Medina scored once and drove in another, Klebart added a RBI, and Capozziello scored once. Dan Schock also had two RBI's and scored once for SHU. On the mound, James Taubl provided 3.1 innings of relief, allowing just one earned on four hits, while Jason Foley struckout two in a scoreless ninth inning to send the game to extra innings.
Conti's triple in the tenth was his third hit of the day. He also scored twice and added a RBI. Dan Hopkins also recorded three hits. Mac Crispino drove in two runs, while Radziewciz and Billy Zolga each scored twice. After throwing the final three scoreless innings giving up just one hit, David Sacco earned his first win of the year. Combined with Anthony DiMauro, the two held Sacred Heart without an earned run for the final 6.2 frames, scattering just four hits and two walks.
Before Sacred Heart's seventh run fourth, the Stags had a big inning of their own, plating four in the second to take control early. After SHU could not take advantage of getting the leadoff man on its first two at bats, Fairfield's first six batters all got on base in the four run second. Tracy and Ciccone both singled before Zolga lined a RBI double down the left field line to score Tracy. Conti then continued the hit streak as his attempted squeeze resulted in a single, while also bringing in Ciccone in the process. Radziewic was next hit by a pitch to bring Crispino to the plate, who delivered Fairfield's fifth hit of the frame, singling to second base. Although one run scored, the Pioneers were able to get the first out when Shaw gunned down a runner at home, ultimately resulting in an out after a rundown. That play help limit the damage to just one more run on a RBI groundout by Salvo the next at bat before a strikeout ended the inning.
SHU sent twelve to the plate in the fourth inning. Victor Sorrento led it all off by getting hit by a pitch, which would be the first of two times he would reach base before the third out. Capozziello followed that up with a single before Keith Klebart gave SHU its first run of the game with a RBI groundout. Jake Friar then walked to give put two base runners on for Schock, who brought both of them in with a double down the left field line to cut the deficit to one. Kenny Byram would tie the game in the next at bat, singling home Schock for a 4-4 tie. Medina gave Sacred Heart its first lead with a third consecutive hit, also doubling down the left field line and bringing Stag starter Aaron Howell's day to an end. DiMauro's first faced batter of the day resulted in a fly out that was misplayed by the centerfielder, giving the Pioneers one last opportunity to add to its lead, which Short took advantage of. His single through the left side put an exclamation on the huge inning, scoring both Medina and Ted Shaw, who heads up running allowed him to move up to second on the error.
An error would also come back to hurt the Pioneers a couple of innings later, resulting in two unearned runs for Fairfield. Although Taubl ran into some trouble when two walks and a single loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, he appeared to have gotten out unscathed when he induced a potential inning ending grounder. Instead, an error permitted two Stags to come in, cutting the three run deficit to just 7-6. This allowed Fairfield to tie it up with one run in the eight. Radizewicz doubled with one out before coming in to tie the game on Crispino's RBI single.
SHU had a chance to take the lead in both the top half of the ninth and tenth, as it got the leadoff man aboard in both before eventually reached second, but each time Sacco was able to make the timely pitches to get out of it unharmed.
Neither starter made it through five innings. Ethan Lonardelli went 4.2 innings for SHU, allowing eight hits and three earned, while Howell did not make it out of the fourth, giving up six earned on six hits in his 3.1 innings. Connnor Landers was tabbed with the loss after allowing the game winner, finishing with a line of .1 innings, two hits, and one earned run.
Sacred Heart will look to return to its winning ways when it plays its first home game since April 7 on Friday at 3 pm against defending Northeast Conference champion Bryant.
