Box Score FAIRFIELD, CONN. (April 28, 2015)—The Pioneers staged a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Fairfield University Stags prevailed in the seventh topping the Sacred Heart softball team 6-4 at Pioneer Park Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Kelyn Fillmore went 2-for-3 in the loss hitting in two runs as the Pioneers fall to 12-28 on the season.
The Stags took an early lead as Sam Frungillo took Kacie Wentworth to the centerfield fence for a double driving in Lauren Filicia and Tori Reed. After giving up an unearned run in the top of the third for a 3-0 FU lead, Adrianna Mallory came in to relieve Wentworth.
The junior managed to shut down the stags through the fourth inning, when the Pioneers got their first run on two hits. Rookie Lauren Delgadillo ripped a double to leftfield moving to third on Andrea Sidor's sacrifice bunt. Behind her, Fillmore drilled the ball to deep right field which was caught by Kate Robinson, but allowed Delgadillo to score SHU's first run of the game.
Mallory got into a jam in the bottom of the inning loading the bases before Jamie Carlson took over in the circle. The sophomore got Reed to swing at the third pitch for the second out of the inning before Filicia got picked off third base getting Sacred Heart out of the inning.
Carlson put down the Stags in order in the top of the sixth allowing the Pioneer bats to come alive in the bottom of the inning. Delgadillo led off the inning reaching base on an error coming home thanks to back-to-back singles from Sidor and Fillmore. Another single from Victoria D'Addario brought home Sidor tying the game at three. Lauren Falkanger issued consecutive walks to Hannah Ford and Alyssa Pitre sending Fillmore across the plate with the go-ahead run.
Carlson struggled to get the necessary three outs in the top of the seventh to secure the win for the Pioneers. After striking out the first batter, she gave up three runs on four walks and a hit before Wentworth re-entered striking out Molly Roche to get out of the inning.
Entering the bottom of the seventh down 6-4, Sacred Heart loaded the bases, but couldn't push a run across.
The Pioneers hit the road Wednesday to take on Army in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
