Four Homeruns Lead SHU to 8-1 Win as Pioneers Split with LIU Brooklyn

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FAIRFIELD, CONN. (April 11, 2015)—Kelyn Fillmore ripped two homeruns as the Sacred Heart softball team split Saturday's doubleheader with LIU Brooklyn. Fillmore's were just two of four Pioneer homers that led to SHU's 8-1 win over the Blackbirds. The offense didn't carry over into the second game as LIU's Nicole Archer held SHU to just two hits throughout the 3-0 shutout.

The Blackbirds got on the board first on Celinna Cosio's solo shot over the fence in left centerfield, but it was just one of two hits SHU starter Jamie Carlson allowed. The sophomore was impressive in the circle striking out 13 batters on the way to her fifth win of the season.

Fillmore, who was 2-for-4 in the game, put the Pioneers on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a homerun kick-starting a three-homerun inning for the Pioneers. Next batter, Justine Sibthorp, singled through the left side before Victoria D'Addario ripped a homer over the leftfield fence lifting SHU to a 3-1 lead. With no outs, Hannah Ford, who was 3-for-6 on the day, singled through the right side and advanced to second on Alyssa Pitre's walk. This time it was Courtney Machamer who sent a bomb over the left centerfield fence capping off the Pioneers' six-run inning.

Sacred Heart tacked on two more run in the bottom of the fifth as Fillmore led off the second consecutive inning with a homerun. Behind her, Sibthorp and D'Addario hit back-to-back doubles for SHU's final run.

Kacie Wentworth got the start in the circle for the Pioneers in game two. After getting out of a jam in the first, the senior gave up three runs on five hits in the top of the third inning before Adrianna Mallory got called in to relieve her. Mallory was lights out allowing just two hits through the rest of the game, but unfortunately SHU just couldn't get the bats going.

Sacred Heart takes the field again Sunday for a doubleheader against Wagner at noon on Pioneer Park.
