Box Score FAIRFIELD, CONN. (April 1, 2015)—The Sacred Heart softball team shut out 6-0 Quinnipiac Wednesday afternoon in the 2015 home-opener. Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) was impressive against the Bobcats giving up just two hits over seven innings. The senior racked up seven strikeouts and never allowed any of Quinnipiac's three base-runners past first.
Quinnipiac starter Hannah Lindsley was perfect through four innings collecting four strikeout, but Justine Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) ended her perfect game leading off the bottom of the fifth beating the throw for an infield single. The next batter lined out to second base sending Hannah Ford (New Fairfield, Conn.) to the plate with one out and a runner on first. The rookie hit a bomb over the left field fence for the first runs of the game. The homerun sparked the Pioneer offense who put five more runners on base and scored two more runs in the inning.
Sacred Heart tacked on two more to their 4-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Sibthorp led off reaching base after being hit by a pitch and went to third as Carina Zupa (Glen Cove, N.Y.) worked a walk behind her. Next batter, Ford, swung at the third strike, but Sibthorp and Nicole Deissler (Commack, N.Y.), who pinch ran for Zupa, moved into scoring position on the passed ball third strike. Sibthorp crossed the plate as Courtney Machamer (Williamstown, Pa.) hit into a fielders choice, and Deissler sprinted home on Kelyn Fillmore's (Simi Valley, Calif.) bloop single to right field.
The Pioneers take the field again this Friday at home against Northeast Conference foe Mount St. Mary's in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
