Pioneers Win First Dual Match of Spring at NJIT, 6-1

NEWARK, N.J. – The Sacred Heart University women's tennis team picked up its first dual victory of the spring season in comfortable fashion on Sunday, defeating NJIT, 6-1. The Pioneers are now 2-3 overall, while the Highlanders fall to 0-6.

Competing in her first dual match of the spring, Katie DeRienzo won her fifth straight to improve to 11-3 overall with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Zanotta at first singles. Nicole Rydzewski, Taylor Gurda, and Sabrina Navarro Lopez cruised to easy victories at third, fifth, and sixth singles respectively. The three combined to only lose four games, with Navarro sweeping her competitor.

Lindsey Post's match at fourth singles was the only one to go three sets. The junior pulled off the triumph after falling in the first, 6-2. She then went on to win the second and third by that same score.

After a 6-1 setback in first doubles, the Pioneers bounced back to win the second and third contests and earn the point. DeRienzo and Rydzewski as well as Gurda and Navarro both defeated their competitors, 6-1. DeRienzo and Rydzewski have won three straight doubles matches together and are a team best 4-2.

Sacred Heart competes again next Saturday at Hartford beginning at 1 pm.
