Box Score WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team led 2-0 after the first period Saturday night over the Army West Point Black Knights at Tate Rink, but Army scored five unanswered goals in the final two periods to win 5-2.
Sacred Heart (5-10-2, 4-7-1 AHC) got on the scoreboard early. Justin Danforth one-timed a Jordan Minello feed past Army goaltender Parker Gahagen to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead 5:00 into the game. Coltyn Hansen extended the lead to 2-0 with a shorthanded goal 10 seconds into a Black Knights power play, going end-to-end for a highlight reel tally.
Army (4-6-4, 3-5-4 AHC) got on the scoreboard 6:26 into the second period when Ryan Nick went top shelf past the glove Nathan Perry to make the score 2-1. Sixteen seconds later, Tyler Pham snuck a Conor Andrle pass over the goal line to tie the game 2-2. The Black Knights took the lead, 3-2, with 9:05 remaining in the period when Brendan McGuire ripped a shot from the top of the right circle on a breakaway for the go-ahead goal. Sacred Heart outshot Army 12-6 in the third period, but it was the Black Knights that tacked on two more goals, winning 5-2 to sweep the weekend series.
The Black Knights outshot the Pioneers 31-28. Both Perry and Gahagen made 26 saves. Sacred Heart was 0-for-2 on the power play as Army was scoreless on three power plays.
The Pioneers return to the ice on January 2, 2016 when Sacred Heart opens a weekend series against the Niagara Purple Eagles at Milford Ice Pavilion.
FIRST PERIOD
- Danforth's goal was his team-leading sixth of the season and first since Nov. 13. Minello and Evan Jasper had the assists.
- Hansen's goal was his fifth of the season. It was also his second shorthanded goal of the year. Erlich Doerksen had the assist on the goal, his second of the year.
- Perry stopped all 14 shots he faced in the first period.
SECOND PERIOD
- Sacred Heart had three shots in the first three minutes of the second period.
- Army went on the power play with 17:01 to play, but didn't have a shot on goal.
- Doerksen had a shot saved by Gahagen with 9:15 left in the period.
- The Black Knights' Trevor Fidler hit a goalpost near the end of the period.
THIRD PERIOD
- The Pioneers had the first seven total shot attempts of the third period, but only one was on goal.
- Jasper was denied of a tying goal by Gahagen with 13:37 to play.
