Second Period Rally Vaults Holy Cross Past Pioneers

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey scored 1:05 into Friday night's game against the Holy Cross Crusaders at the Hart Center, but the Crusaders scored five unanswered goals in a 5-1 win.

It took just two shots for Sacred Heart (3-3-1, 2-2-0 AHC) to get on the board, as Coltyn Hansen ripped a laser from the top of the left circle past Paul Berrafato 1:05 into the game to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Holy Cross (3-4-0, 2-1-0 AHC) tied the game with 11:53 remaining in the first. Mike Barrett forced a turnover in the Sacred Heart zone, then fed Scott Pooley in front of the net for the tying goal.

The Crusaders took the lead with 16:14 to play in the second period. Matt Vidal crashed the net to sneak a shot past Brett Magnus to give Holy Cross a 2-1 lead. Michael Laffin extended Holy Cross' lead with 10:33 left in the second, putting a T.J. Moore pass into the net to make the score 3-1. Brett Mulcahy capped the scoring in the second period with a goal at the 4:24 mark, giving the Crusaders a 4-1 advantage heading into the third. Holy Cross tacked on one more goal in the third period.

Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart 34-30. Both goaltenders made 29 saves. The Pioneers were 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Crusaders were scoreless on the man advantage five times.

The two teams wrap up their home-and-home weekend series Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. The opening faceoff is at 7:05 p.m.

FIRST PERIOD

- Alec Butcher put a shot on goal 48 seconds into the period.

- Hansen's goal was his third of the season. His goals have all come in the last four games.

- Magnus made his first save of the night with 16:46 to play on a T.J. Moore shot right in front of the goal

- The game was delayed 25 minutes with 14:44 to play when a pane of glass broke during play.

- Kory Kennedy hit a goalpost with 13:48 remaining during the Pioneers' first power play.

- Sacred Heart held Holy Cross to one shot on its only power play of the first period.

- The Crusaders' Peter Crinella nearly put Holy Cross ahead with 2:05 left, but Justin Danforth cleared away the rebound after a Magnus save. 

SECOND PERIOD

– Magnus had to make a post-to-post save on a Danny Lopez shorthanded breakout 38 seconds into the period

- Zach Luczyk was denied of the tying goal by Berrafato with 14:45 to play.

Jordan Minello ripped a shot from the blue line right into Berrafato's glove with 13:58 to play.

- Danforth hit the inside of the goal post with 7:33 to go on a 3-on-2 breakaway before the Pioneers went on the power play

Spencer Graboski nearly scored with 4:43 left in the period, but Berrafato made the save while falling down to the ice.

- Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart 17-10 in the second period.

THIRD PERIOD

- Magnus stopped a Tim Driscoll shot from close range with 16:13 remaining.

- Berrafato robbed Alec Butcher of a goal with 14:43 to play.

- Nick Lotito almost scored on a rebound in the final minute.

- Sacred Heart was outshot 9-8 in the third period.
