Box Score PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team was tied with the Robert Morris Colonials 3-3 after two periods Saturday night at 84 Lumber Arena, but Robert Morris scored three unanswered goals in the third period for a 6-3 win.
Sacred Heart (5-7-2, 4-4-1 AHC) took a 1-0 lead with 11:53 to play in the first period. Senior defenseman Josh Phillips scored right in front of the Robert Morris net off of a feed from Spencer Graboski. The Pioneers extended their lead with 17:10 left in the second period as Connor Doherty one-timed a Justin Danforth past past Terry Shafer to make the score 2-0.
Robert Morris (6-2-3, 5-1-3 AHC) got on the board with 16:08 remaining in the second on a breakaway goal by David Friedmann. The Colonials tied the game, 2-2, four minutes later when Matt Cope put a shot into the top corner of the net past Sacred Heart goaltender Brett Magnus. Zac Lynch gave the Colonials a 3-2 lead with 6:02 to play in the period with a shorthanded goal. The Pioneers tied the game 3:06 before intermission when Zach Sabatini scored on the power play.
The Colonials broke the tie 1:20 into the third period when Cope scored his second goal on the power play, making the score 4-3. Chase Golightly put Robert Morris ahead 5-3 with a power play goal with 15:59 remaining. Kyle Horsman added an empty-net goal with 1:07 left to play to make the final score 6-3.
Sacred Heart outshot Robert Morris 34-33 for the game. The Colonials were 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Pioneers were 1-for-6. Magnus made 27 saves as Shafer stopped 31 shots.
The two teams wrap up their weekend series Sunday at 5:05 p.m.
FIRST PERIOD
- Magnus made three saves in the first two minutes.
- Jordan Minello was denied on a breakaway by Shafer with 17:12 left.
- Phillips' goal was his second of the season. Alec Butcher had the secondary assist for his team-leading eighth of the season.
- Magnus made a kick save on a shot from RMU's Brady Ferguson with 10:02 to
- RMU went on the power play with 4:45 remaining, but was held to one shot on goal. Evan Jasper had a shorthanded breakaway during the SHU penalty kill, but didn't score.
- Magnus stopped two Zac Lynch shots in the final minute.
- Sacred Heart blocked 13 shots in the first period.
SECOND PERIOD
- Sacred Heart opened the period with 1:58 of power play time. Zach Luczyk had two shots on the man advantage, including one that Shafer made a post-to-post save on with 18:07 to play in the period.
- Doherty's goal was his first of the season and first in 20 games. Danforth and Evan Jasper had the assists.
- Minello had a breakout chance denied by a Shafer glove save with 14:16 to go.
- Erlich Doerksen ripped a shot from the blueline with 13:31 remaining, but Shafer made the save and pounced on the rebound.
- Coltyn Hansen had a shot stopped on the power play with 6:45 left.
- Sabatini's goal was his second of the season and first on the power play.
- Magnus made a save on a Friedmann shot with 1:47 remaining.
- 14 of SHU's 19 shots in the second period came on the power play.
THIRD PERIOD
- 13:34 Doerksen had a one-timer from close range saved by Shafer with 13:34 to go.
- Magnus made back-to-back saves on shots by Golightly and Cope with 9:53 remaining.
- RMU went on a five-minute power play with 6:47 remaining, but Sacred Heart held the Colonials to one shot on goal.
- Jasper was denied on a shorthanded breakaway with 3:03 to go, followed by a Doherty shot that hit the post.
