HAMDEN, Conn. - Katie DeRienzo and Olivia Podsiebierski both improved to 2-0 with victories in Sacred Heart's 5-2 defeat at Quinnipiac in non conference tennis action on Wednesday afternoon. The Pioneers end their fall dual season at an even 1-1.
DeRienzo's win came in straight sets at first singles, 6-4, 6-3, while Podsiebierski needed a third set tiebreaker to ultimately come out on top at fifth singles. The freshman rallied from dropping the first set, 2-6, to force the third set with a 6-4 triumph in the second. She then carried that momentum into the tiebreaker, prevailing by a score of 10-5.
Paige Olson came the closest to a third win for SHU at third singles, falling in three sets. She too lost the first set, 3-6, before taking the second, 6-4. She dropped the tiebreaker 10-6.
The three doubles matches were all tightly contested. Sacred Heart's Claudia Ruiz and Tori Oates looked poised for a victory at third doubles after going ahead 5-4, but the Bobcats stormed back to win the final three games and take the match, 7-5. Olson and Lindsey Post also fell in a close contest at first doubles, 6-4, while Podsiebierski and Taylor Gurda dropped a 6-3 decision.
Sacred Heart plays the first of its final two fall tournaments on October 23-24 at the ITA Championships hosted by Dartmouth.
