Box Score MILFORD, Conn. – Three goals in the third period powered the Canisius Golden Griffins to a 3-0 win over the Sacred Heart men's hockey team at the Milford Ice Pavilion Friday night in Atlantic Hockey Conference action.
Sacred Heart (2-2-1, 1-1-0 AHC) and Canisius (2-3-0, 2-1-0 AHC) played two scoreless periods as Pioneers' goaltender Brett Magnus had 11 saves. Canisius' Reilly Turner kept the Pioneers off the scoreboard with 16 saves. In the third period Canisius broke the scoreless tie with 12:31 remaining as Shane Conacher was able to push one by Magnus from close range, with assists from Ryan Schmelzer and Geoff Fortman. Schmelzer added a second goal with 1:54 remaining with assists from Conacher and Ralph Cuddemi on the power play. Canisius capped off the scoring with an empty net goal by Cuddemi with 56 seconds to play.
The Pioneers outshot the Golden Griffins 29-21. Sacred Heart was 0-for-5 on the power play while Canisius was 1-for-4. Magnus made 18 saves while Turner had 29.
Canisius and Sacred Heart drop the puck again Saturday night at the Milford Ice Pavilion. Faceoff is at 7:05 p.m.
FIRST PERIOD
- Conacher's apparent goal at 11:44 of the period was overturned after a video review.
- Jordan Minello's breakaway attempt with 1:25 to play was shot wide left.
- Justin Danforth's breakaway shortly after sailed just over the crossbar at 00:38.
- Sacred Heart went 0-for 4 on the power play.
- Canisius has not scored a first period goal in it's first five games this season.
SECOND PERIOD
- Magnus' pad save with 16:33 to play kept the game scoreless.
- Canisius' Joe Murray thought he had his first goal of the season with 13:23 remaining but the goal was again overturned by video replay.
- Magnus' brilliant glove save at 11:16 thwarted a Canisius scoring chance.
- Coltyn Hansen's shot from in close was stopped by a Turner glove save with 1:19 left.
- Sacred Heart was 0-for 1 on the power play in the period while Canisius was 0-for 2.
THIRD PERIOD
- Liam Clare's shot from in close with 16:45 remaining was knocked away by Turner.
- With 15:08 left in the period, Zack Luczyk's slap shot from the circle went wide left.
- Alec Butcher hit the crossbar with 13:47 to play.
- Turner gloved Mitch Nylen's hard shot from just inside the blue line with 6:30 remaining.
