Box Score DANBURY, Conn. – Two power play goals in the third period helped get the Sacred Heart men's hockey team a 3-0 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils at Danbury Ice Arena Saturday night in the second annual Jason Pagni Memorial Game.
Sacred Heart (1-1-1) and Arizona State (1-4-0) played a scoreless first two periods Saturday night. The Pioneers' goaltender Brett Magnus had 17 saves through 40 minutes, with the Sun Devils' Ryland Pashovitz making 15 saves to keep the game 0-0. Evan Jasper finally broke through with the game's first goal at 2:45 of the third, scoring on the power play with assists from Zach Luczyk and Justin Danforth. Sacred Heart tacked on another power play goal at 14:59 when Jacob Brightbill crashed the net to knock home a pass from Zach De Concilys. Danforth added an empty-net goal at 18:34 for the 3-0 final score.
Each team had 26 shots in the game. Sacred Heart was 2-for-8 on the power play, while Arizona State was 0-for-6. Magnus made 26 saves for his first career shutout. Saturday marked the first shutout for the Pioneers in October since posting a 3-0 win over Canisius on October 28, 2005.
Sacred Heart opens Atlantic Hockey play on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at AIC at 7:05 p.m.
FIRST PERIOD
- Coltyn Hansen had a shorthanded breakaway with 12:05 left in the period, but put a shot wide.
- Jordan Minello had a shot saved from the slot at the 11:27 mark after the Pioneers had just killed a penalty.
- Magnus made back-to-back saves on shots by Arizona State's Sean Murphy and Anthony Croston with 10:30 to play.
- Zach Sabatini had a shot stopped with one second remaining in the first.
SECOND PERIOD
- Magnus denied Jordan Masters of a wraparound goal with 16:38 to play.
- Danforth had a shot saved with 15:20 remaining.
- The Sun Devils' Joe Lappin put a shot wide on a breakaway with 13:16 to go.
- Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play in the period.
THIRD PERIOD
- Jasper's goal was his first of the season and the Pioneers' first power play goal of the year. Luczyk's assist was his third in the last two games.
- Magnus stopped two shots from Ryan Belonger with 8:48 and 8:18 to play respectively.
- Spencer Graboski put a shot wide in front of the goal with 6:10 to play.
- Brightbill's goal was his second of the season.
- Danforth's goal was his first of the season and second point of the night.
