Box Score AMHERST, Mass. – Kory Kennedy had his first career two-goal game of his career Friday night, but a third period rally from UMass powered the Minutemen to a 5-2 win at the Mullins Center.
Kennedy put Sacred Heart (0-1-1) ahead 1-0 with a goal at 10:05 of the first period, assisted by Zach De Concilys and Zach Luczyk. UMass (3-0-0) tied the game at 17:41 on a goal by Keith Burchett. The Minutemen took their first lead of the game 6:08 into the second period on a power play goal from Dennis Kravchenko. Kennedy then tied the game at 15:11 from Luczyk and Erlich Doerksen. Kravchenko broke the tie at 13:08 of the third period, with his second goal giving UMass a 3-2 lead. Dominic Trento then put the Minutemen up by two goals, 4-2, at 15:42. Kravchenko ensured his hat trick with an empty-net goal with 2:37 to play in the game.
Sacred Heart outshot UMass 38-26, holding the Minutemen under 10 shots in each period. The Minutemen were 1-for-4 on the power play, as the Pioneers were scoreless on two power plays. Brett Magnus made 21 saves in goal for Sacred Heart as Henry Dill had 36 for UMass.
The Pioneers host Arizona State Saturday night at the Danbury Ice Arena for the Second Annual Jason Pagni Memorial Game. Faceoff is at 7:30 p.m.
FIRST PERIOD
- The Pioneers went on the power play 0:55 into the game on a Trento elbowing penalty. Sacred Heart had two shots on goal with the man advantage but did not score.
- Sacred Heart had three straight shots on goal 7:25 into the period from Kennedy, Luczyk, and David Iacono.
- De Concilys recorded his first career point on his assist on Kennedy's first goal.
- UMass' first goal came off a faceoff win by Steven Iacobellis.
SECOND PERIOD
- The Minutemen's power play goal was just the second allowed by Sacred Heart over its last nine games, dating back to last season. The Pioneers had killed 39 of its last 40 penalties entering Friday's game.
- The Pioneers took six straight shots before Kennedy tied the game 2-2.
- UMass' Austin Plevy hit the post near the end of the period.
THIRD PERIOD
- Jeff Carroll hit a goalpost early in the third period.
- The teams skated 4-on-4 at 8:31 when UMass' Ray Pigozzi and Sacred Heart's Jordan Minello each went to the penalty box for tripping. The Pioneers had two shots on goal during those two minutes, but Dill stopped the shots from Jacob Brightbill and Evan Jasper.
- The Pioneers had just four shots on goal once UMass took the 3-2 lead.
