Box Score FAIRFIELD, CT – Dana Cosmedy's seventh goal of the season proved to be the difference Friday night as the Sacred Heart women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over the Central Connecticut Blue Devils, snapping its six-match losing streak.
Sacred Heart (4-10-0, 1-4-0 NEC) came out strong, taking the first four shots in the game. However, Central Connecticut (5-4-3, 1-2-1 NEC) outshot the Pioneers 9-6 in a scoreless first half. Both goalkeepers – Talia Schwartz of Sacred Heart and Nikki Turley of Central Connecticut – made four saves in first 45 minutes. The Pioneers scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 51st minute. Cosmedy headed in a cross from Emily Montgomery inside the six-yard box to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Sacred Heart controlled possession in the second half, taking 10 shots to the Blue Devils' six en route to its first conference win of the season.
Sacred Heart hosts Mount St. Mary's on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 12 p.m. at Campus Field for Senior Day.
FIRST HALF
- Marissa Christy's shot off of a corner kick in the second minute was saved by Turley.
- Cosmedy had a header cleared by the Blue Devils' defense in the fourth minute
- Central Connecticut's first shot on goal came in the 22nd minute, when Shelbie Carr hit a shot that was saved on a bounce by Schwartz
- Schwartz knocked a free kick from Charlie Branch over the crossbar in the 30th minute.
- Maggie Filja's header off of a long free kick was saved by Turley in the 42nd minute.
SECOND HALF
- Elisa Robligio rang a shot off the crossbar in the 49th minute.
- Lindsay Corallo had a header go wide of the goal in the 79th minute.
- Alex Mesropyan put a shot over the crossbar in the 82nd minute.
- CCSU's Danielle Pearse missed wide with a header near the 6 yard box in the 84th minute.
