Sacred Heart Rallies Twice Before Falling to Saint Anselm, 6-2

Box Score

SHELTON, CONN – The Sacred Heart University women's hockey team overcame two second period deficits, but ultimately fell to Saint Anselm, 6-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Sports Center of Connecticut. The Hawks, powered by a hat trick from Tiffany Herron, scored the last four goals of the game to improve to 7-3-1 on the year. Alanna Woodford and Briana Connolly scored the goals for the Pioneers (3-6), while Amanda Fontaine made 49 saves in the loss.

After a scoreless first period, Sabrina Iannetti began the flurry of five second period goals 5:23 after the first intermission. It did not take long for SHU long to respond, by way of Woodford on the power play three minutes later. Alex Davis set her up set up the senior assistant captain, whose fifth goal of the season ties her for the team lead.

Saint Anselm took the lead right back on Alex Starzyk's goal with 7:46 remaining in the second period, but SHU responded right back once again, on the power play, with Connolly's goal 41 second later. Davis recorded her second assist of the game on the goal, while Casey Stathopoulos extended her team-high in points to eleven with an assist.

With the game looking as it was heading into the second intermission tied at two, the Hawks struck with eight seconds remaining on the clock. On the power play, Herron beat Fontaine for her first goal of the game.

The Hawks came out of the locker room quickly with a goal just twenty-eight seconds into the third to extend its lead to 4-2 on Herron's second goal. Sabrina Iannetti added a goal with 16:01 left to push the Hawks lead to three, before Herron finished up her hat trick with just over five minutes remaining.

The Hawks outshot the Pioneers 55-10 for the game. Both team scored two power play goals, with SHU going 2-4, and Saint Anselm going 2-5.

SHU will be back at the Sports Center of CT tomorrow, as they host St. Michael's for a 5 pm start.
