Box Score ERIE, Pa. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team led the Mercyhurst Lakers 2-0 10:52 into Saturday night's game at Mercyhurst Ice Center, but the Lakers scored four unanswered goals to win 4-2 and sweep the weekend series.
Mercyhurst (10-6-3, 8-3-2 AHC) went on the power play two minutes into the game as Zach Luczyk (Charlton, Mass.) was called for interference. The Lakers had two shots on the goal with the man advantage, as the Pioneers also put a shot on goal when Jake Lynes (Ellicott City, Md.) took a loose puck from the Sacred Heart blueline into the Lakers' zone but was denied a shorthanded goal by Brendan Wildung. The Pioneers took advantage of their first power play, scoring with 12:36 remaining in the period. Alec Butcher (Anchorage, Alaska) put a Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ont.) pass right over Wildung's shoulder top shelf to give Sacred Heart a 1-0 lead.
Sacred Heart (6-13-3, 5-8-3 AHC) extended the lead to 2-0 with 9:08 left in the first. Luczyk forced a turnover at the Lakers blueline, then fired a low shot between Wildung's legs and in the goal for his eighth tally of the season. Jacob Brightbill (Anneville, Pa.) nearly made the score 3-0 less than a minute later, ringing a shot off the crossbar. Mercyhurst got on the scoreboard with 1:13 remaining in the first period. Tic-tac-toe passing from Anthony Mastrodicasa and Daniel Bahntge led to a Matthew Zay power play tally, putting the score at 2-1 heading into intermission.Jordan Minello (Sweaburg, Ont.) almost put Sacred Heart ahead 3-1 with 15:49 remaining in the second period, putting a pass from Butcher off the goalpost. Connor Doherty then put a shot from the point right into Wildung's glove.
The Lakers tied the game 2-2 with 14:15 to play in the period as Zac Frischmon finished off a rush started by Alec Shields and Tyler Shiplo with a goal. Frischmon nearly put Mercyhurst in the lead at the 12:27 mark, but Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) made a sprawling save to keep the game. Less than 30 seconds later, Daniel Bahntge put a Kane Elliot drop past past Vazzano to give the Lakers' a 3-2 lead. With 9:28 remaining in the period, Mercyhurst took a 4-2 lead. Tyler Enns attempted to put a shot past Vazzano from right in front of the net, but Vazzano appeared to have made the save. After an official review, the on-ice officials ruled Enns' shot crossed the goal line.
The Pioneers had a chance to get back in the game with 1:22 remaining in the second when Zay was called for hooking, putting Sacred Heart on the power play. David Iacono (Newmarket, Ont.) fired a hard shot from the blueline that Wildung stopped in the final minute. Drew George (Regina, Sask.) was right in front of the net but couldn't guide the rebound home as the period ended with the Lakers ahead by two goals. Sacred Heart dominated the third period, outshooting Mercyhurst 13-1. However, Wildung stopped all 13 shots as the Lakers hung on for a 4-2 win.
Sacred Heart had twice as many shots as Mercyhurst on the night, 36-18. The Pioneers were 1-for-7 on the power play while the Lakers were 1-for-6. Vazzano made 14 saves as Wildung stopped 34 shots.
The Pioneers return to Milford Ice Pavilion on Friday, Jan. 16 to open a weekend series against RIT. Faceoff is at 7:05 p.m.
