STONY BROOK, N.Y. (March 16, 2014)—Sacred Heart pitchers struck out seven batters as the softball team was lost two games to Stony Brook 4-3 Sunday afternoon. The sweep drops the Pioneers to 5-7 on the season.

Pioneer bats were silenced through five innings in game one only getting three hits before opening up the top of the sixth with a two-out rally nearly tying the game. With two down, Justine Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) worked a walk becoming Sacred Heart's fifth base runner of the day. Rookie Kelyn Fillmore (Simi Valley, Calif.) moved her over with a single allowing third baseman Kate Nadler's (Southbury, Conn.) double to drive Sibthorp home for SHU's first run. The next batter, McKenna Wiegand (Gilbert, Ariz.), doubled to left field knocking in Fillmore and Sibthorp concluding SHU's scoring.

Adrianna Mallory (Pine Bush, N.Y.) picked up the loss after pitching a complete game. The sophomore gave up four runs, two earned, on nine hits and struck out three Seawolves. She gave up two runs in the bottom of the second when Nicole Schieferstein's double drove in two. Stony Brook got one run in the fifth and one more in the bottom of the sixth on Jessica Zeilman's solo homerun.

The Pioneers got on the board first in the second game with two runs in the top of the fourth. With the leadoff batter out, Jade Bowins (Frederick, Md.) reached on a single to left field before back-to-back walks for Annie Dreher (Saugus, Calif.) and Sibthorp put the ducks on the pond for Fillmore. The rookie doubled down the left field line for two RBI.

Another rookie, Andrea Sidor (North Vancouver, British Columbia) picked up an RBI in the top of the fifth driving home Weigand with a single to centerfield, as Jamie Carlson (Corona, Calif.) held the Seawolves scoreless through six innings.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh up 3-0, Carlson gave up three consecutive hits concluding with Lexie Shue's three-run shot over the left field wall which tied the game. Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) came in in relief getting two outs, but putting two runners on base with a hit by pitch and a walk. Finally, Bria Green send the game-winning double down the left field line to complete the sweep.

Sacred Heart heads to the UMBC Spring Classic next weekend facing Bowling Green and UMBC on Friday.
