Pioneers Fall 5-1 At RIT Friday Night

Box Score

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team had its four-game unbeaten streak snapped by the RIT Tigers Friday at the Gene Polisseni Center Friday night, losing by a score of 5-1.

Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, Sask.) was tested early in goal for the Pioneers, having to make two post-to-post saves on shots by Brad McGowan and Josh Mitchell in the first three minutes. Connor Doherty (Holden, Mass.) had Sacred Heart's (4-6-2, 3-4-2 AHC) first shot on goal Friday night, firing a shot from the point right into Jordan Ruby's glove with 15:10 remaining in the period. The Pioneers had two power plays halfway through the first period, but had just two shots with the man advantage as the game remained scoreless.

The Pioneers had a chance to get on the board with 1:36 to go in the first. Ben Lake (Calgary, Alberta) sniped a shot from the wing that Ruby stopped, with the subsequent rebound try going wide. RIT (4-6-2, 3-4-2) got on the scoresheet with 0:15 left in the first period. After the Pioneers turned the puck over behind their own net, Josh Mitchell fed Matt Garbowsky in the slot for a one-timer that put the Tigers ahead 1-0.

Sacred Heart had a pair of shots early in the second period. Mitch Nylen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) had a shot from the blueline saved by Ruby 0:15 into the period. Evan Jasper (Whitby, Ont.) had a shot from the wing stopped 28 seconds later. The Pioneers had a chance to tie the game on the power play 1:04 into the second, but it was RIT that added a shorthanded goal to make the score 2-0. With the Pioneers making a line change, Bodnarchuk came out of his net to play the puck along the boards. Garbowsky knocked the puck away from the Sacred Heart goaltender, with Danny Smith scoring on a vacant net with 17:37 to play in the period.

The Tigers extended the lead to 3-0 with 8:14 to go in the second, as Matt Garbowsky scored all alone in the Pioneers' zone. Sacred Heart got one goal back in the period. With 1:28 to go, Lake slid a backhand shot just inside Ruby's glove-side post to make the score 3-1. Jasper and Drew George (Regina, Sask.) assisted on the tally, marking the third straight game that the trio combined for a goal. RIT tacked on two more goals in the third period to make the final score 5-1.

RIT outshot Sacred Heart 38-26 for the game. The Tigers were 1-for-3 on the power play while the Pioneers were scoreless on five power plays. Ruby made 25 saves for RIT while Bodnarchuk stopped 33 shots for Sacred Heart.

The two teams conclude their weekend series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m
