Pioneers Skate To 2-2 Tie At Holy Cross

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Spencer Graboski's (Quesnel, B.C.) power-play goal with 3:13 remaining in the second period tied the Sacred Heart men's hockey team with Holy Cross 2-2 Saturday night at the Hart Center, as the two sides skated to a 2-2 draw at the Hart Center.

Holy Cross (2-4-2, 2-0-2 AHA) scored first Saturday night at 6:32 of the opening period. T.J. Moore tracked the puck down behind the Sacred Heart net and found a cutting Scott Pooley who snuck the puck between Andrew Bodnarchuk's (Saskatoon, Sask.) left skate and the goal post to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers tied the game at 11:02. Ben Lake (Calgary, Alb.) poked the puck free from a Holy Cross forward and made a long pass to Jordan Minello (Sweaburg, Ont.). Minello found Zach Luczyk (Charlton, Mass.) in the slot for a one-timer past Matt Ginn to make the score 1-1. Each team had nine shots and one goal in the first period.

The Crusaders regained the lead 7:18 into the second period. Brett Lubanski re-directed a Matt Scarth shot from the left circle to give Holy Cross a 2-1 lead. Despite being outshot 13-8 in the period, the Pioneers tied the game with a power play goal at 16:47. Graboski scored Sacred Heart's first power play goal in five games with four seconds left on the man advantage, firing a wrister over Ginn's shoulder top shelf to make the score 2-2. Minello and Luczyk got assists on the tying goal.

Sacred Heart (2-5-1, 2-3-1 AHA) controlled play to open the third period, outshooting Holy Cross 6-1 early. The Pioneers had a five-on-three power play for 52 seconds with 5:05 to play in regulation, but had just two shots.  Sacred Heart wasn't able to capitalize on the power plays, with Bodnarchuk having to stop a 3-on-2 rush with 2:51 to play to keep the game tied 2-2. Connor Doherty (Holden, Mass.) also blocked a Holy Cross shot in the final 1:30 to force overtime. The two teams combined for just three shots in overtime as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart 29-28, with both teams putting 27 shots on goal in regulation. The Pioneers were 1-for-6 on the power play and held the Crusaders scoreless on five power plays. Bodnarchuk made 27 saves as Ginn had 26. Minello and Luczyk each had two points in the game for the Pioneers.

Sacred Heart hosts Canisius for a weekend series beginning Friday, Nov. 7 at 7:05 p.m. at Milford Ice Pavilion.
