FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's tennis team fell to defending MAAC champions Quinnipiac 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon. They conclude their fall dual season with a 1-1 record.
Katie DeRienzo and Sabrina Navarro Lopez picked up SHU's two points on the day as they each won their singles match. DeRienzo defeated Sophia Dzulynsky 6-2, 6-1 at number one singles to improve her record to 6-2 for the fall. Navarro swept Nicole Keklik 6-0, 6-0 at number six singles to pick up her first career collegiate singles victory. The other Pioneer victory came at third doubles as Emma Pezzullo and Taylor Gurda won their match after Quinnipiac was forced to retire late in the third set.
Pezzullo and Lindsey Post both dropped close singles matches. After winning the first set, Pezzullo was narrowly defeated in both sets two and three by Michelle Dassa 1-6, 7-6 (4), 11-9 in fifth singles. At second singles, Post dropped two close sets to Jacqueline Raynor 4-6, 5-7.
Sacred Heart returns to tournament play next Friday, October 17, at the ITA Championships held at Yale University. The two-day tournament will conclude on Saturday.
