Box Score MILFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's hockey team put 27 shots on goal Friday night against the Holy Cross Crusaders at Milford Ice Pavilion, but Crusaders goaltender Matt Ginn stopped all of them as Holy Cross won 3-0.
Holy Cross (2-4-1, 2-0-1 AHA) got on the board 6:51 into the game. Jake Bolton let loose a shot from the point that caught a deflection and found the net. Scott Pooley and Brett Mulcahy had assists on the first Crusader marker. Sacred Heart's (2-5-0, 2-3-0 AHA) best chance to score in the first period came with 8:26 to play when Jacob Brightbill (Anneville, Pa.) fired a shot from the slot that Ginn saved. Drew George (Regina, Sask.) attempted to knock home the rebound but Ginn stopped that as well. The Pioneers went on the power play with 3:40 left in the first but were held without a shot.
The Crusaders struck quickly to start the second period. With Holy Cross on a 5-on-3 power play, Mike Barrett finished off some tic-tac-toe passing from Matt Scarth and Karl Beckman at 1:12 of the period to make the score 2-0. Sacred Heart had three power plays in the second period, putting eight shots on goal but still were not able to put a puck in Ginn's goal. The Pioneers had 11 shots in the period. Danny Lopez put Holy Cross ahead 3-0 midway through the third period. Sacred Heart outshot Holy Cross 9-7 in the final period, but Ginn just wasn't letting anything pass.
Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart 30-27. Justin Danforth (Oshawa, Ont.) led the Pioneers with four shots, as George, Zach Sabatini (Johns Creek, Ga.), Jeff Carroll (Kingston, Ont.), Connor Doherty (Holden, Mass.), and Zach Luczyk (Charlton, Mass.) each had three shots. Alex Vazzano (Trumbull, Conn.) made 27 saves.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass. at 7:05 p.m.
